  1. How do you pay bus drivers – hourly or by trip/route? What about extra routes, is it hourly or by the trip/route? We pay our drivers hourly. Permanent employees (that have a regular daily route) are guaranteed 2 hr call in minimum or actual whichever is greater. If the extra routes are continuous following their regular route it’s continual paid time. If it is an extra route (they are covering someone else’s midday) then it is a 2 hour minimum or actual whichever is greater.

If hourly, how do you help mitigate/prevent padding of time? Clock in? Gps?
We use GPS and the EVIR pre/post trip system to closely look at actual “on duty” times. We’ve been able to cut back on waste and even condense some routes.

Do you pay for bus driver training? Yes.

Do you pay them their hourly rate or a trainee rate? If they are a current employee it is their hourly rate. If they are a prospective employee they are paid at a base van driver rate until they obtain their CDL.

Are they guaranteed a job after, or do they go on sub list? They go on a sub list and work their way into a permanent position.

Do you utilize trainers? If so, are they internal, or are they provided by an outside company? Yes, they are internal.

Do trainers get paid a shift differential or extra pay? They are paid their normal hourly rate for the actual hours they work.

Do you have a “shop helper” or “mechanic helper” job classification? What’s the pay rate? Is it year round, summer? Number of hours? No we do not have this position.

What’s your sub driver hourly rate? (Ours is $17.88/hourly, couple dollars less than drivers) $16.03 Non-CDL holders, $22.70 CDL holders.

Do you have standby sub drivers? Are they guaranteed one/two hours of minimum pay? Yes both permanent or “book” driver (guaranteed 2 hours am only) and non-permanent (not guaranteed any time).

Do you reimburse drivers for their CDL license? (We pay the difference between a regular driver’s license and the CDL license) Yes, we pay the difference between as well.

Let me know if you need any more information!

  2. Drivers paid hourly for all routes/trips and are only paid for actual time worked. Drivers manually fill out time sheets but we have GPS on most vehicles so time can be checked. We contract our busing so we do not pay for driver training or have an internal shop/mechanic helper position. We pay contractor rate for bus drivers. We request our contractor have stand by drivers for emergencies (they have 2 on stand by daily)–get one hour minimum to be on stand by. Hope this help.
